Dorothea,

You're welcome. I hope it answered any questions you had.

As to the have lots of tags, it's something I've been testing to see if/how it helps. I've still gathering data but my results are inconclusive so far.

Have you tried it? If so, what results did you get?

Hi David,
Very helpful comments on linking...thank you. I also notice that you have quite a number of tags on your post. Can you explain a bit about how that helps...do you find that it drives more traffic to your blog? Thanks again for your very helpful posts.

Here is a perfect example of what I was talking about in my comment above.

I made the blog post and through some circuitous route, mostly RSS I expect, it automatically got to the above comment (via Technorati) and I got a link, certainly one I would not have gotten otherwise.

Marcia,

I haven't found that website directories or submitters help me very much anymore, at least in the niches I'm in.

Social media really is it right now, until the next big thing I suppose!

Anyway, that doesn't answer your question.

In my opinion, submission software and services can help save a lot of time and effort (the obvious appeal to them) and judicious/cautious use of them should be just fine. So if you want to use them go ahead but "slowly". Track the results though and see if they make a difference.

I do use submission software for certain things (not directories, I don't do that) but I am careful how I use it. Some submission software I use is smart and actually submits some each day so it looks natural.

With the social media sites so powerful now and with RSS everywhere there, I use RSS most of all (including in the Social Media Domination Machine I mentioned above).

With the right setup, and it can take a while to get everything just right, it becomes trivial to spread information and links through the Web; in fact, I rarely remember that it happens but I get lots of new links each day by doing only one thing (for me mostly that one thing is a blog post but it could be a Tweet or even an e-mail).

What do you think about using directory submitters to create backlinks? I have seen software from everything from free to $150 and probably up from there. Also there are of course directory submission services in all price ranges.
Do these(all)fall in the category of too many links too fast - as well as the quality issue - or can you use them if you do it cautiously?
