Facebook has added a new action, called “action links”, to their pages; these go along with the existing actions such as “Like” and “Comment”.

But, unlike the other actions, these put you in control of what happens and is of real benefit to any online business, profit or non-profit.

These action links will let visitors to your Facebook pages interact with the page in any number of ways which you can define, either with built-in actions or custom actions you create and one great feature is the links will show up in Timelines, News Feeds, and Tickers.

Let’s what it means to you and how it works…

-More-

What it Means to You

The short answer is more traffic and more interactions with your page and your apps.

Let me show you an example right from Facebook.

Say you’ve story on your page about a great pizza recipe from your site. When you add an action link you might see something like this (note the “Save the Recipe” action link):

Example of a Facebook Action Link

When they click the “Save” action link you can get “so something” for example get one of your apps installed and also update the story; it might look something like this:

Example of a Facebook Action Result

Even in that simple case you benefit by getting the app installed and by getting the action result on the person’s timeline.

How It Works

Using the above example, when somebody sees the pizza recipe and clicks on the action link “Save the Recipe”, Facebook will see if they have your app installed and if not pop up that window requesting approval of your app; if it is installed then Facebook will go to the URL specified in your app dashboard.

This should do one of 2 things: (1) publish a new “it was saved” story (like in the second picture above) or (2) if you’re leaving Facebook they will pop up a box asking if that’s okay; note, if you don’t do #1, every time they go to the page they still see the action link (not the phrase letting them know they’ve already taken the action).

Here’s what the app dashboard screen to do this looks like.

Facebook App Dashboard Screen

As you can see, this isn’t something the average person can easily do like highlighting a post but it is something that you app developer can do and you can expect to start seeing it in apps and app creators very soon.

While this wasn’t a step-by-step look at how to implement Facebook action links you should now have a better understanding of what they are and how you can use them in your Facebook Apps.

The latest and hottest Web site on the Internet now; according to Alexa, Pinterest is now the 16th most popular Web site in the United States and in the top 50 in the world and the 4th most popular social media site.

To give you some context Pinterest is about equal to Twitter providing 3.6% of referral traffic to all Web sites, Twitter is 3.61%.

If you aren’t familiar with Pinterest — at Pinterest.com — it’s a site where people can go and “pin” pictures and videos; you can upload pictures for people to view, Like, repin and comment on.

The Pinterest says this about what they are…

“Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and share their favorite recipes.“

I’m still testing out Pinterest in some but I thought I should make sure you’d heard of it and started looking at it yourself.

Here’s what I’ve found so far and what you need to know…

The most obvious reason you would think about is how you can use Pintestest to get more targeted prospects of buyers.

After all, your ultimate goal is to put more money in your bank account.

So far it appears that Pinterest can really generate some good prospects but only if you do it correctly.

Nurse Your Pinterest Prospects

You need to approach Pinterest prospects slowly and get them to your blog or Facebook page and further bond with them before you try to take them further.

From what I can tell, Pinterest prospects aren’t in “buyer” mode or even the beginning stages of research. It seems that most of them just like your pictures enough to want to click to see more about you.

Be Patient with Your Pinterest Leads

If you send them to an opt-in page, even one closely related to your picture, they are very unlikely to take any action (like subscribing to your list) but if you send them to something interesting related to your picture and connect with them you can then get them to take some action.

The conversion rate going from Pinterest to opt-in was terrible but was so much better when going to an intermediate place like a blog; in fact, the actual number of subscribers was higher even though the number of people getting to the opt-in page was a lot lower.

This, plus the fact that Pinterest doesn’t like self-promotion (at least obvious self-promotion), are strong reasons to try this technique out for yourself; always test though, I haven’t done conclusive tests and, of course, each situation is different — you might find exactly different results although I’d be surprised if you did in most situations.

Make sure you put in links

It’s really not that hard, you just need to put in a link. Duh.

What I mean is that after you pin a picture you can have a short description and, in that description, you can include a link. So add a link to a page on your Web site or blog that is specifically related to what you pinned.

Also add links to your Web site in your profile.

The key thing is to pin the right things.

Of course, you shouldn’t put any ads or anything blatantly promotional but what you should pin depends upon what you’re promoting and what niche you’re in; I can guarantee you that if you pin something promotional and/or have a promotional sounding description they will remove, I’ve seen it happen a number of times (never to me though!)

Pin enticing and fascinating photos

If you’re in a specific niche then pin enticing and fascinating photos of things in your niche that you also have great content for along with some promotions.

If you’re promoting yourself or your company then pin pictures of your office staff, company events, logos, you speaking, or whatever. Just remember you don’t want boring pictures or people won’t see them or click through but fun, interesting, exciting ones will get clicks and get people to your Web site.

If you have or promote products/services then you could pin product/service images but it’s best to do it in an interesting way or, at best, few people will be interested and, at worst, Pinterest will take action; this does appear to work better with services so far.

Make sure the photos are of high quality, nobody is going to be impressed with the photo or with you if it’s bad looking.

Other Tips for Using Pinterest

Make it easier for people to find your pins by adding keywords to them. To do that just add some hashtags at the end of your description; that means put some #keyword at the end of your description (separate each #keyword with commas) — for example a pin about a great catch by Derek Jeter might have #baseball,#yankees,#jeter as the hashtags,

Check out what’s been pinned from your Web site by using this special Web address http://pinterest.com/source/[*Put Your Web Address Here*]/ — for example, http://pinterest.com/source/StreetGuideToWebTraffic.com/

When you pin something, you are looking for 3 types of things: repins, likes, and comments. To get more comments end the description with a question.

Get conversations going

Of course, it depends upon what the picture is when deciding on what the question is but it needs to be one that invites an easy answer.

For example, if it’s a picture of a location ask “can you guess where this was taken?” or “what do you think this of my new dress design?”

You want to get conversations going with people.

Pinterest is a marvelous site that is addicting to people and they spend a lot of time on it and, as you’ve seen, it can bring you lots of traffic; for example, according to Monetate, 5 apparel retailers had an increase of 289% from July 2011 to December 2011 attributable to Pinterest.

Don’t neglect this site even if you don’t see how you can use it.

Sure some niches are better than others but I think you’ll find, like I did, a lot of great ideas how you can use it for any niches after you start using it and looking around at what other have done.

Tell me below how you’re using Pinterest and ways you’ve gotten people from Pinterest to your Web sites or Facebook pages.

Links are of critical importance when trying to get free traffic. Really, I can’t emphasize enough how powerful having quality links are to free traffic; in my opinion it is the best thing you can do to get a steady stream of willing buyers. I did a little research for this article and was appalled by some of the bad information out there, no wonder I get these questions. To be fair, there is also a lot of good information out there but obviously there is still massive confusion. I’m going to answer these “burning questions” I’ve received as truthfully as I can.
(Note: I really would prefer the questions as comments on the blog rather than direct e-mails so that it saves me and you time; but I’d rather you ask via e-mail than not ask at all)

Links are of critical importance when trying to get free traffic. Really, I can’t emphasize enough how powerful having quality links are to free traffic; in my opinion it is the best thing you can do to get a steady stream of willing buyers.

I did a little research for this and was appalled by some of the bad information out there, no wonder I get these questions. To be fair, there is also a lot of good information out there but obviously there is still massive confusion.

I’m going to answer these “burning questions” I’ve received as truthfully as I can.

Do I know everything?

Of course not, who does, but I’ve studied and implemented and get tell you what I’ve found to be the truth and what the current generally accepted “best practices” are.

You’ll need to try them and test them to see if they work in your specific situation but they work in most situations so they are good places to start if nothing else.

How Do I Get Thousands of Links?

This isn’t the right question to ask.
The point is you should much prefer quality links over quantity.

At one point in time, the more links you had the better it was but that time has come and gone. What matters now is the quality of your links not the quantity of them.

Look at it this way, say you wanted to get into real estate investing and you went looking for help.

You could walk out your door and ask your neighbor and walk around asking everyone who lived in your city and when you were done you’d have talked to thousands or millions of people, most of whom no nothing about real estate investing, and gotten a lot of answers and opinions.

But if you had Donald Trump’s personal cellular telephone number and could just call him and talk to him.

Which do you think would help you the most? Donald Trump, of course, because it isn’t the quantity of information but the quality.

The search engines care about quality links and consider them tremendously more important then links from other places.

I can tell you that links from places like Squidoo, Hub Pages, universities and other sites that are considered “authority sites” are worth hundreds or thousands of links from other unknown places; just like a recommendation from Donald Trump will be much more valuable than a recommendation by lots of strangers.

So don’t ask how you can get thousands of links, ask how you can get quality links. Of course, getting thousands of quality is the Holy Grail

Isn’t It Hard to Get Links?

Absolutely not!

Well wait, it depends upon what you mean by hard.

There are lots of ways to do it and those ways are really hard but they do take some work (all of which you can outsource so you don’t actually have to do it yourself.

Remember what I said above about the importance of quality links, well, most of them you can easily get links from.

Here’s some ways to get quality links, the more you do the better it is but doing any of them are better than not:

Create Squidoo Lenses

Create Hub Pages

Do Social Bookmarking (like Digg, Propeller, etc.)

Create articles for submission to article directories

Create press release and submit them

Create videos and submit them to YouTube, Viddler and video directories

Create and submit podcasts

Go to forums and other groups and submit questions, comments and answers

Go to other people’s blogs and post comments (you could even post one below!)

Enable your RSS feeds and submit to places like Feedburner where are sort of clearinghouses from RSS feeds

Use trackback services (I use http://rpc.pingomatic.com/, http://api.moreover.com/ping, and http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2)

Use a Social Media Domination Machine like I do

These are all good ways of getting links, most of the high value links.

They do require some work but it isn’t hard and, like I said, you can pay others to do it.

Won’t Google Slap Me If I Try to Get Links?

Really, people are concerned about this.

There are not many successful Internet Marketers who don’t try to get links; successful being the key word here.

Google LOVES links but they don’t like it when people try to scam the system so you’re more a risk if your use “black hat” techniques.

If you stick to the ways above then you’ll be okay.

Also, the search engines like “normalcy” so if you, all of a sudden, have hundreds or thousands of articles, bookmarks and things pointing to your site this is unnatural and they will notice it and likely devalue the site.

What are “Bad Links”?

I got questions about whether this type of link or that type of link was bad.

There are virtually no “bad links” but some are better than others and some ways of using links are better than others.

Let’s look at a few examples.

Internal Links

For some reason, internal links have a bad reputation.

In fact, Google at least, seems to subtract points if you do not have internal links; so links to your privacy policy and disclaimers are easy ways to do this.

But if you reference one page from another, not uncommon, like I did above when I referenced previous blog posts, that is fine and can even be very helpful.

Excessive cross-linking though can be bad depending upon how it is done; for example, if every pages links to every other page,

Links to External Sites

Link internal links, search engines actually like links out to external sites.

Remember, they like natural and normal and it is very natural and normal to link out to other sites so doing this is okay.

What is not okay, and not natural and normal, is LOTS of links out to other sites, so don’t be excessive about it.

Also, there is some evidence that where you link to has a small effect on the value of your page so if you link to spammer, links farms, etc. you may get hurt; these are bad links.

Finally, as I talked about in my blog post, Google has decided it doesn’t like external links that are raw affiliate links so they would be (sort of) bad also.

Spammer Links

There is some logic to thinking that the search engines would consider links to your site from people like spammers and link farms would be bad links.

But, there is also logic to thinking that since you can’t control where links come from it isn’t your fault. After all, if you wanted to destroy your competitors you’d just get a lot of links to them from these bad sites if that worked. They certainly won’t help you though.

I have not seen any indications, nor have I heard any true experts say, that these are bad links so I wouldn’t worry about them.

Conclusion

There you have it, the truth about links.

Remember, it’s more important to get quality, high value links than thousands of just any old links.

You can get those links by: creating Squidoo Lenses, creating Hub Pages, doing Social Bookmarking, creating articles for article directories, creating press releases, creating videos, creating podcasts, commenting at forums and other groups, commenting at other people’s blogs, enabling your RSS feeds, using trackback services, use a Social Media Domination Machine

Remember that Google and the other search engines love links but they like them to be “natural” and don’t like it when people try to scam the system.

So while there are virtually no “bad links”, internal links and links out from your Web sites are good things because they fit in the normal and natural category.

Do you have any link advice?

Do you have any link questions?

If so, leave a comment and get a link!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this, particularly because the purpose of links it to get traffic and build a list.

You’ve probably seen lots of e-mail about the Tellman & Shawn from free, $1,997 List Pros list building course they’re giving away (well for $7.95 shipping and handling).

There is an exit pop that let’s you get a digital version for 99 cents so I did and, just so far, my opinion is you SHOULD get this, it is definitely worth $1 (well, it’s worth more actually!).

You can find it at http://www.StreetGuideToWebTraffic.com/Recommends/ListPros

Note: you are automatically enrolled in Tellman’s List Building Club, free for 30 days, if you don’t want to continue just call them or submit a support ticket. It’s worth trying out, I’ve gotten a lot out of it.

You know the importance of social media and how it is a must if you want to build a lasting online business.

You know it but you don’t do it or you do it “now and then” or “here and there”.

Then you rationalize it by how you “don’t have time to do everything” or “you need to stay focused”.

You “know” that’s right because all the gurus say so.

I can’t argue the importance on not trying to be and do everything or the importance of being focused on the critical path to your goal but…

I say it is B.S. to apply that logic to your social media efforts.

You can, with relatively little effort, be on more social media sites than you even knew existed.

Here’s how…
Social media has so fully embraced RSS that it’s hard to tell where the separating line is.

You’re saying “RSS, big deal!” “RSS, sure I use that.” or “RSS, what’s that” and to that I say, that it is one of the keys to social media domination and if that isn’t a big deal then I hope you are one of my competitors

And if you are using it and not dominating you definitely need to read on.

If you don’t know what RSS is, you’ve at least seen RSS icons all over the place, they look like various adaptations of this orange thing…

All you really need to know about what RSS is it how it can help you.

Just think of RSS as a sort of universal language that computers can use to talk. In particular, and this is how you can use it to dominate, it is a language that computers can use to automatically deliver Web content.

Read that again, “automatically deliver Web content“.

That is the key to your social media domination.

Think about it, if you just made one Twitter post (even from your phone), that post could, within minutes, be on blogs, Squidoo, Faceboock and hundreds or thousands of other places.

And not even just your blogs and other Web properties but on other people’s also, because if they subscribed to your RSS feeds it will be on their sites and on the sites of people who subscribed to their RSS feeds and on and on.

The 30 seconds you spend putting up one single Tweet could mean it is all over the Internet in just a short people of time. Talk about being everywhere!!!

Now, of course, if all you do are Tweets then you’ll be everywhere but probably not for long and it won’t do you any good.

But I hope you begin to see the power of RSS and how you can use it to dominate your niche in the social media sites.

And think of the reach you’ll get.

Not everyone may go to your blog or be on Twitter or be on Facebook or wherever.

But the vast majority of people will be on at least one of those places and as your name starts dominating the things they are interested in, at the places they hang out, don’t you think they’ll want to check you out and, if you’re doing a good job, follow you or become your friend or become part of your personal network.

You bet they will and these will be people who will be predisposed to listening to you and trusting you and buying from you; they are the best sorts of targeted traffic.

How to Get Started

Just follow these 7 steps and you’ll be on your way:

Step 1: Create Accounts

The hard part is the setup. Unless you use tools to create the accounts for you, you do have to go to each of the sites and create an account.

It’s not hard but it is boring and tedious but fortunately you only have to do it once, at least once per persona, and the benefits you reap could be amazing.

Step 2: Find a Publisher

Find a service that will do all the RSS work for you; some good ones are Ping.fm and hellotxt.

You could go around to all your social media sites and do the subscriptions to your other sites manually but why not “outsource” that to the services, it’s free.

And you will have to do that for those places that the services don’t support but the services do something like 40-50 places so you’ve got a good start.

Step 3: Enable Your Accounts

Be sure to set it up so that your accounts can be updated by texting or e-mail. This will let you update your accounts via e-mail or texting, freeing you from having to log into an account or even being at your computer.

An example of this, so you understand what I mean, is in Twitter when you go to “Settings” there is a “Devices” tab that you can use to enter your cell phone number so you can just text an update and let your machine loose to spread the word.

Step 4: Handling Responses

The easiest way to handle responses is to use an RSS reader to get the responses all in one place (again, you don’t want to be logging into all these accounts all the time).

Most of the accounts will send out RSS so just use an RSS reader, I use Google Reader, and make it easy on yourself.

For those accounts that don’t send out an RSS feed, after you send them a strongly worded message about why they should send out a feed, look at http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/, it should help you.

Step 5: Make Your Posts

Now that everything is set up and ready you can use your “social media domination machine” by making post to just one place and having it spread throughout the Web.

Start by making a post once every day or so but be consistent.

Step 6: Monitor and Adjust

See what the responses you get are and post more or less frequently based upon your situation and how the responses go; if you get lots of responses post more, not many post less.

Periodically you’ll need to monitor and adjust, particularly at the beginning when you’re just building a following.

Step 7: Blast Out the Good Stuff

Now just get some quick articles for the blogs, various media sites, and articles directories.

How do you get the articles? Here are some ways:

1. Write them, this isn’t as hard as it seems and if you have any writing ability and know how to use Google you can create one in about 10 minutes. Personally, I use Answer Analyst to help me but it isn’t necessary just faster.

2. You can have them written, good real native English writers are available for as little as $5 an article. You might also try the local high school or community college you can get some good stuff done by students; the disadvantage is that you won’t be the highest priority to them so you can’t always rely on getting the articles when you need them.

3. You can buy PLR articles and rewrite them enough to make them yours. Here’s where you can get 111,107 articles to get you started; oh yeah, John’s only charging $1, yes one dollar, for all 111,107.

Just put the articles up and let your social media domination machine go to work!
Conclusion
There you have it, a simple way to spend a little time and get big returns, all by using the simple technology of RSS.

Leave a comment and tell me what you think and I’d love to hear all about the social media domination machine you’ve set up in your niche.
